LYNNE MILLAR
everyday beauty
I’m trying to understand how I have not written about Lynne’s work on An Eye for Art until today. The only thing I can think to explain it is that I was worried I wouldn’t do justice to the artist and her work. Not only does Millar paint the most luscious landscapes and florals, but she is also incredibly generous and kind. While Lynne and I have never met in person, she has given me advice countless times over the years, especially on plein air (outdoor) painting which I admit I’m still building up the courage (and supplies!) to try.
This first one is an oldie (2019) but the painting that first drew me to Lynne’s work, so I just had to show you!
I had to do a real deep scroll into Lynne’s instagram feed to find that, but I still absolutely adore everything about the painting. Anyone who’s taking children into a museum can relate.
In the years since discovering Millar’s work, I’ve only fallen more in love. I’m a proud owner of one of Lynne’s paintings from her travel to Giverny, Monet’s garden and hope to collect more. Lynne makes it easy and affordable to become a collector, with daily paintings for sale for $200 on her instagram feed. Even more enticing, Lynne donates part of the profits of these daily sales to her favorite charities, currently giving to doctors Without Borders.
Much of Lynne’s work is gone far before it makes it to her website, so my best advice is to follow along on instagram. As a bonus, you’ll get to follow her travels to paint around the world (she hosts painting retreats, too!) and Millar’s plein air painting around her home in Northern California.
I know I say this a lot, but I’m so mesmerized by Lynne’s work. I want it throughout my home. The loose strokes are so free yet confident and just suggestive enough to make me feel like I’m standing at her easel, seeing the subject in real life.
I mean I just want to be sitting there right now.
As I alluded to before, Millar is incredibly generous with her knowledge. We’ve messaged countless times and sent marco polos back and forth, with Lynne sharing what’s worked for her, where she’s struggled, and encouraging me to get out and paint. Being an artist can be a pretty solitary experience, but Lynne has created an incredible community of peers and friends with whom she regularly paints. I’m dreaming of joining one of her artist workshops sometime soon!
